Any dental emergency like an injury to the teeth or gums can be potentially serious and should not be ignored. Ignoring a dental problem can increase the risk of permanent damage as well as the need for more extensive and expensive treatment later on. Sudden loss of a dental restoration (such as a crown or a bridge), causing cosmetic concern or difficulty eating is also sometimes referred to as a dental emergency, even if there is no pain.
To avoid dental emergency trips to the dentist, it helps to get regular checkups. Have an oral exam once or twice a year. During regular checkups, your dentists look for signs of diseases, infections, problems, injuries, and oral cancer. Your dentist may recommend more or fewer visits depending on your oral health.
